Special Instructions for Dinner in Our Dining Hall this Thursday (Dec. 10th)

On Thursday, we are hosting our annual Trumbull Fellows’ holiday reception and dinner.  Beginning at 1:00 PM on Thursday, custodial and dining hall staff will be working in the common room to set up for the reception.   The reception will take place beginning at 5:30.   The clean up after the reception should be finished by 7:30 PM at the latest.

If you are looking for a quiet place to study while the common room is unavailable, the fellows lounge/Farr room will be open from 1:00 PM until 7:30 PM.  For that purpose.   These rooms are located on the 2nd floor of entryway K.  Also, the seminar room has been reserved for quiet study from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM.

As for dinner on Thursday, the Dining Hall will be open for students from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday.  This is to give the staff time to set up for the fellows holiday dinner that starts at 6:30 PM.  Know that all other dining halls will be open during their regular hours.

Holiday Crafts/Candygram Workshop and Movie

Remember, 9:00 PM in the dining hall on this same night (Thursday, Dec. 10th) our TCC is hosting a holiday crafts workshop and showing a movie.  Hot chocolate will be served.

Holiday Dinner, Friday December 11th 5-7

Our wonderful dining staff has planned a special holiday dinner on Friday, Dec. 11.  Don’t miss it.  There will be dishes you’ve not seen before (e.g. the soups will be “truffle scented mushroom bisque with roast portabella mushrooms” and “butternut and bacon puree soup with chives”  There will be special beef and shrimp and scallop and vegetarian dishes as well and, of course special desserts.  I note especially (given we’re heading toward finals) that “comfort foods” will be featured as well.  We all need them.

Be sure to thank our dining hall staff for their efforts.

The  (continuing) Dish Plea!!!

The heads of the dining hall staff have told me that, right now, what they really, really, really would like as holiday presents from all our students is their own dishes back in the dining hall placed safely in the bins in the servery.   I continue to make this plea for any dishes, glasses and utensils you have taken from the dining hall to be returned to the dining hall.  They have a budget, they must consider all costs of their operation (and they are evaluated on this).  Missing dishes must be replaced (or all of us complain when the problem really is us).  Please help out.  Resist taking dishes from the dining hall; return any dishes you have in your rooms or apartments.

For our Seniors;  Wine/Chocolate/non-alcoholic beverages reception on Friday, Dec. 11th

For our seniors, there will be a senior reception immediately following the dinner in the Trumbull House featuring wines, beer and yet more food.    We’re well aware of the press of work too so know that there will be plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and sympathetic understanding responses to descriptions of all the work you will have left to do.

An (somewhat embarrassing) apology and note about early morning study breaks:  They will happen; they will start at 6 a.m.

I will continue to open our FARR room as I can for early morning study. I’ll provide coffee, tea, and cereal for our early studiers (who increase in number at this time of year).  For one of those breaks last week I confess to oversleeping and opening the door late.  I ordinarily am a very early riser and am up well before opening that door – but I stayed up way too late last Thursday and was late rising (and opening that door) on Friday.

Thanks to our intramural leaders for their study break last week.

We have many breaks planned for next week with lots of food (and massages):  On the 14th Dean B will hold one with Indian Food, on the 15th we’ll go for enhancing your health with massages in the Common Room (thanks to Deb Bellmore for organizing it) and bowls of fruit and fruit juice appearing all over the college,  on Wednesday  the 16th John Williams will host one with pizza and our grad affiliates will host one of Dec. 17th.    I’ll add my own early morning in the FARR room and late night in the house breaks.

Next weekend I’ll make sure that the FARR room is open (with coffee etc.) for study both Saturday and Sunday morning.

It’s been a wonderful time at Yale for Dance.

I attended the Yale Ballet Company’s performance this past week at the off-Broadway Theatre.  I loved it and congratulate our very talented freshmen Lance Chantiles-Wertz and Charlotte Brannon on their performances.  I wish I could have seen the performance by Rhythmic Blue as well (they performed this weekend) but they were so popular that they (like the Yale Ballet group) were out of tickets by the time I tried to secure some.  That will teach me to move on this more quickly.  The Latin Dance group will perform this coming week.  I saw them last year, I recommend watching them.  Finally, there was swing and ballroom dance taking place last Friday at Yale.  Congratulations to all on your talents, on having fun with all of this and being very impressive while you’re at it.
