TRUMBULL COLLEGE: April 26, 2021
I hope you’re all hanging in there. I realized a couple of weeks ago that I needed to take my own advice and take a break – I was running on empty and those closest to me called me out on it. We went to Niantic for a little retreat over the weekend (including Break Day #5) – stayed in an Airbnb, went to the beach (it was cold, but who cares), caught up on sleep and ate lots of ice cream. It was much needed, and there’s a picture at the end of this newsletter if you scroll down.
Now, of course, many of you might be thinking to yourself – “We don’t have time for that right now, Dean C”, “I am already behind” etc etc. I get it – but breaks, however short, are important. Sleep is incredibly important. We’re almost there – 2 more weeks of classes and then Reading Period & Finals. I know you can do it!!!
If it’s any comfort to those of you who haven’t met with me in a while, my office hours tend to pick up between now and the end of finals. In the spring term, I also see an uptick in seniors who want to meet. Please don’t hesitate to check in (see below), particularly if you’re having a tough time – I’m here.
A friendly reminder about e-mail: As many of you know, it’s very helpful to copy Leah when reaching out with questions. That allows us to triage better. Also, if you find yourself coming up with a series of questions, please set up a meeting or visit our open hours. Finally, particularly when you’re waiting on a reply, make sure “message” is NOT in the e-mail address – we do not receive messages when students reply to Dean’s Notes or other notices (unfortunately). Please e-mail us directly. Thank you.
Course Registration for Fall 2021: Again, this site should be your guide: https://registration.yale.edu/. This advising calendar is also a helpful resource, particularly to see when major departments are holding info sessions. Please know that if you have questions, Leah and I are here (see below).

ACADEMICS

The 9th Annual Marina Keegan Award for Excellence in Playwriting
In 2013, an award was established to honor the memory of Marina Keegan ’12, a gifted playwright who died in a car accident five days after graduating magna cum laude from Yale.
Graduating seniors in English and Theater Studies, as well as seniors in other departments who have studied playwriting at Yale, are invited to submit a portfolio of dramatic writing for consideration – two plays, at least one of them full-length.
On the title page, include your name, your residential college, your Yale class, your email address, and your phone number. Save your document with a filename that includes your last name. Upload your submission via email attachment using this link or email it to jane.bordiere@yale.edu, by noon on Friday, April 30, 2021. The award is jointly sponsored by the English and Theater Studies departments.
Annual Spring Teaching Forum: Looking Back and Looking Forward: Reflecting on Yale’s Year of Online Learning
Join the Yale Poorvu Center for the Annual Spring Teaching Forum on Friday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.! This year’s forum will bring together the Yale community to reflect on the challenges and successes of online learning as we approach the upcoming year with anticipation and uncertainty. A panel of professors from across the disciplines will share their experiences during an introductory discussion. Participants will have the chance to think together about how this year has reshaped their approach to teaching and learning. How did we attempt to forge community at a distance? How did we confront existing and emerging issues of inequity? What positive changes will we take with us into next year? Register on Yale Connect for the Zoom link.

European Studies Council - Undergraduate Fellows Networks
Two networks are being launched for students interested in working in Latin American & Iberian Studies and on European Studies. These networks are being launched under the auspices of the Council on Latin American & Iberian Studies and the European Studies Council, respectively. Interested undergraduates should complete brief self-descriptions here (for Latin American & Iberian Studies) and here (for European Studies). Students can join both!
