Hope you had a relaxing weekend (sorry – I know you had class yesterday, but Leah and I were off)! A big thank you to our FroCos, who helped our TrumFrosh make it through Orientation during these unusual times!! The job is always difficult, but this year has brought new challenges – and I truly commend their efforts. Congrats, TrumFrosh, on making it through your first week of classes!
Now that we’ve settled in for the term (earlier than usual), I want to draw your attention to the Academic Strategies Program – please make use of their workshops! I have heard from students from all years that these workshops are incredibly helpful. Make use of them! Every week, we include a list of the upcoming workshops – you’ll find them below.
As students are trickling out of arrival quarantine, please be safe and please be mindful. I appreciate (and continue to learn about) the complexities we all face during pandemic times. Know that I’m here for you and here to listen.

Meeting with me

All of my meetings (including open office hours) will be through my Zoom page: https://yale.zoom.us/my/skchandhoke. Keep in mind that we do not set up appointments during the evening/weekends. Please also note that I teach on Wednesday mornings.
OPEN office hours are on Friday mornings from 10am-noon. When you click on the Zoom link, you will be placed into a waiting room. I will speak to students in the order they “arrive”.
ACADEMICS
A schedule with a course in a professional school requires an additional form, which can be found here: https://forms.sis.yale.edu/url/YCCourseChange [Note: SOM courses cannot be added to your schedule through OCS; they must be included manually during the “add/drop” period.
Only four professional school credits can be offered toward the 36 credit requirement; however, students may enroll in more than four credits understanding that all courses will remain on the academic record and be included in the GPA even if not offered toward the 36 credit requirement.
Courses at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at a professional school cannot elect the CR/D/Fail option.
Credit for these courses on your transcript: When you put a Professional School course on your schedule, zero (0) course credits are recorded for the course until you submit your completed Blue Form and the Registrar’s Office determines the course credits for that course after that. Some courses earn 1 course credit in Yale College and some earn 0.5 course credits (most commonly in SOM and EPH). Some do not earn credit.
Yale Degree Audit: Yale Degree Audit (YDA) is a tool that tracks your progress toward the bachelor’s degree. YDA is located on the Academics tab of Student Information System (SIS). YDA displays the Yale College degree requirements that you have already completed and those that are still pending. A “Look Ahead” feature shows you how future course enrollment might apply toward your degree. Yale Degree Audit does not take the place of face-to-face advising, although you may wish to share your audit with your adviser. Instead, it provides an easy-to-read summary of requirements, allowing you and your adviser to spend more time discussing course selection and academic goals. Do not rely solely on your degree audit when planning your courses; continue to use Yale’s standard systems for schedule planning, and employ YDA as an additional tool. More features will be added to YDA in the future, including the ability to track progress toward major requirements. If you have suggestions, general observations, or questions that are not answered by the FAQs, send them to registrar@yale.edu using the subject line “Degree Audit.” If you believe that academic information in your degree audit is incorrect, contact our office.

September 21 Last day to withdraw from a fall first-half term of the course without the course appearing on the transcript.

Individual Mentoring

Walden Peer Counseling is traditionally an anonymous and confidential hotline and walk-in peer counseling service staffed by Yale undergraduates. Given the constraints of the upcoming school year, Walden Peer Counseling will be unable to continue our walk-in services, and instead, we will offer Zoom counseling every night from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in addition to our hotline service, which will be available every night from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m, beginning September 8th. Are you an undergraduate interested in topics related to European, Eurasian, and Russian studies? Would you like to be part of a close-knit interdisciplinary community, access additional funding support, and have unique opportunities to work with graduate students, affiliated faculty and prominent visitors, such as scholars, politicians, and ambassadors from throughout Europe and Eurasia? If so, you may be interested in the new European Studies Undergraduate Fellows Network initiative, which is launching this Fall.
As a counterpart to our existing European Studies Graduate Fellows Network, the Undergraduate Fellows Network will offer a forum for intellectual and social exchange for Yale's students from a wide variety of disciplines. Possible activities include: academic and networking and professional development events, graduate/undergraduate mentoring, socials, and funding for research or other academic travel.
We are looking for your feedback to guide the Network's development. Please help us shape the program by answering a few questions here by September 21. We will be putting out a call for applications to join the network once we have a better understanding of what our undergraduate students are looking for later this fall semester.
