TrumBulletin 1-23-26

February 7, 2026

Hello Trumbullians!

The first two weeks of the semester are always a frenzied pace no matter the degree of prior preparation. The deadlines for our classes, job applications, fellowship applications, postgraduate applications, etc – all happen to fall roughly around the same time. At least, I hope class shopping period is behind and you are situated with your courses for the semester.

For now, however, we have to prepare some severe weather in the coming days. As colder temperatures arrive in the area, please take a moment to review the following information to help stay warm, secure, and conserve energy on campus during the winter months.

·     Check windows and doors to ensure they are fully closed.

·     Keep cooler spaces connected. If your area is usually cool and it is safe to do so, leave the door open to let heat from hallways or common areas help keep the space comfortable.

·     Power down when not in use. Turn off lights, computers, appliances, and other equipment that do not need to remain on.

·     Stay aware of winter conditions. Use caution when walking outside, as snow and ice can make walkways slippery.

·     Report emergency maintenance issues immediately. Call the Yale Facilities Operations Center at 203-432-6888.

For more information on winter, emergency, and personal preparedness, visit the Emergency Management website. Related to these severe conditions, please note that we have to accommodate our Dining Hall staff. So, you may see these members of our community around college grounds over this weekend.

We have some Trumbull events occurring periodically, both the darkroom and ceramic studios open for business. For example, Last Tuesday afternoon (1/20), we hosted Dan Ameresekere for a Tea at the Hoc House, followed by an intimate dinner with students and faculty from School of Architecture. Below are a few more events already on the calendar. Please be on the lookout for spring activities, as many are being planned and will be posted shortly.

Emma Cowles TC ‘25, a Swensen Fellow in Yale’s Office of Strategic Analysis, wants you to know that they are currently hiring for full-time and summer internship positions on their team, starting in summer 2026. Positions are currently available for full-time fellowships and summer internships, both starting in summer 2026. Swensen Fellows work on the most complex strategic challenges facing Yale and help university leaders to make decisions that advance Yale’s mission. Please see their website for more information on the position, desired profile, and application instructions. Applications are now open and due by January 30th at 11:59 pm EST. They have an upcoming info session on January 20th from 6-7 pm EST in HQ134.

If you are a senior participating in the Mellon Forum or receiving a Mellon Grant, I strongly encourage you to present your work at the Yale Undergraduate Research Conference (YURC). Given the many layers of feedback you have already received, your research is well-prepared for presentation, and YURC offers a valuable opportunity to share your work with a broad, interdisciplinary audience. Taking place February 20-22, YURC is the nation’s largest student-run undergraduate research conference, welcoming students from all disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and STEM. Whether you are looking to share your research, connect with undergraduates from across the country, or learn from distinguished speakers, YURC offers meaningful opportunities for students at every stage of their academic journey. At YURC, you can:

·     Present your research to a panel of judges

·     Attend keynote speeches and flash talks

·     Network with industry professionals and fellow scholars

·     Compete for awards totaling $10,000+

Registration is free for Yale College students, and I encourage you to apply with ongoing projects, completed work, theses in progress, or any research. Application deadline is February 1st.

The Winter Season of IM sports is upon us, with MHOOPS (Men’s Basketball), CHOOPS (co-ed basketball), WHOOPS (women’s basketball), BROOMBALL (basically hockey without skates), and DODGEBALL (I trust you are all familiar). Trumbull is ranked well overall, but the IM secretaries have a lot planned for IM participants (new merch, fun parties with free food, more of the old merch), so please get involved.

Valerie Henriquez TC’25 majoring in HSHM, is reaching out on behalf of the Marketing Office of Career and Strategy and Fellowships as our residential college’s Marketing Outreach Coordinator. She is here to offer office hours for students to explore various types of summer and term-time funding opportunities, including Yale Summer Funding and national/external awards. She can answer questions and discuss the many resources, services, and events that the Office of Career Strategy offers, as well as resume and CV reviews. She will be in the Trumbull Buttery at 7-9 pm on Mondays.

Finally, some comments about keeping our community clean. The spaces allocated for trash and recycling (at least in the basement area near the Trumbull kitchen and elevator) need to be kept clean and tidy. We have noticed that disposal of trash and recycling has been EXTREMELY careless in these areas, which in turn creates an invitation to mice, rats, and roaches. So please take extra precautions when you are throwing trash and/or recycling.

Stay safe and stay warm this weekend! Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,
Head Hyder
