Dean’s Notes 9-18-23

TRUMBULL COLLEGE DEAN’S NOTES: September 18, 2023

It sure is a gloomy Monday!  Hope you all enjoyed the lovely weather yesterday!  We spent a lot of time outside over the weekend, and yesterday went to Edgerton Park where they had an event called Sunday in the Park – it was fun!  They have chickens and a lovely community garden. There were activities like pumpkin decorating and origami, so it was a hit for Sahej (who is officially 4½ tomorrow!).  Over the summer, Sahej and I played Hungry Hungry Hippos at an arcade, which was super fun ($$ was spent very quickly with that game!).  He also loved the actual hippos at both the Calgary and Toronto zoos.  We got the Hungry Hungry Hippos board game over the weekend, and needless to say, it was fun and also hilarious.  Each round lasted ~8 seconds. ;)

I’m sending one of my regular wellness reminders, particularly as you probably all noticed that your workload suddenly picked up big time!  It’s that time.  Don’t forget: Getting rest is very important and Vitamin C is your friend (orange juice is a great source!)!  Stay well and get well soon if you already got sick. Also, if you were wondering, it’s not too early to get your flu shot – find more info here: https://yalehealth.yale.edu/topic/flu-information. Have a great week!

TC’27: TONIGHTAcademic Integrity Workshop for First Years (required) on Monday, September 18th at 8:30pm in the Trumbull College Dining Hall.  Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Application Deadlines for DILS and Fields Program: The Yale Center for Language Study is now accepting applications for study in its Fields Program and for study in its Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program.
The Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program gives students the opportunity to study a language that is not currently taught in a Yale classroom. Details and how to apply at https://cls.yale.edu/dils
The Fields Program gives students the opportunity to pursue advanced-level language study within the context of their academic area of focus (generally in areas other literature if the language is taught at Yale, since advanced coursework in literature would likely be available).
Both are non-credit programs, open to all enrolled Yale students (undergraduate, graduate and professional). In each program, students work with a Language Partner—a native speaker of the target language (not a formal instructor)—in two 1-hour sessions for 12 weeks. The sessions aim to develop linguistic and cultural competence through active conversation and practice of what you are studying independently. With a limited number of slots available, a selection committee reviews all applications for their merit and appropriateness, and notifies students of its decisions within four to six weeks after the application deadline. Details and how to apply at https://cls.yale.edu/fields
The deadline for applying to either program for Spring 2024 semester is October 1st at 1:00pm. Please note that all applications must be received by the application deadline (this includes applications for continued study from current DILS or Fields students).
