Dean’s Notes 9-26-23

September 26, 2023

TRUMBULL COLLEGE DEAN’S NOTES: September 26, 2023

I hope you’ve all been staying warm and dry during this gloomy stretch!  We had a little dance party on Sunday night because we usually spend a lot of time outside over the weekend, and that didn’t really happen.  We were mostly trying to dance to truck songs, which was amusing to say the least (I need to give a plug to 20 Trucks – they’re amazing).  Sahej also had his first real swim lesson on Saturday!  I have been teaching him a few things over the past couple of years (particularly how to jump into the pool! ;) but it was time for him to learn properly.

I know that your academic work is really starting to pick up and that “midterm” season has begun.  Still, it’s important to take breaks and carve out time for yourself, hence my starting paragraph.  The sunny, crisp weather (which I love) will come back – enjoy it!  Also, please check out today’s Wellness Fair!  Please know that I’m here for support, so don’t hesitate to set up a meeting, or visit my Friday morning open Zoom office hours (more info below).

Visitors have been removed from Canvas sites: My hope is that you have carefully reviewed your registration schedule and are enrolled properly in all of your courses.  If you have concerns, it is essential that you %20alice.kustenbauder@yale.edu?subject=Issues%20with%20my%20schedule">reach out as soon as possible.

Have a great rest of your week!

Meeting with me

My OPEN ZOOM office hours for each week are listed on the top of my Calendly page. When you click on the Zoom link, you will be placed into a waiting room. I will speak to students (one-on-one) in the order they “arrive”.  My upcoming open hours are on FRIDAY Sept 29th (10am-noon).

Please note that I teach on Wednesday mornings during the fall term.

OTHER
Application Deadlines for DILS and Fields Program: The Yale Center for Language Study is now accepting applications for study in its Fields Program and for study in its Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program.
The Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program gives students the opportunity to study a language that is not currently taught in a Yale classroom. Details and how to apply at https://cls.yale.edu/dils
The Fields Program gives students the opportunity to pursue advanced-level language study within the context of their academic area of focus (generally in areas other literature if the language is taught at Yale, since advanced coursework in literature would likely be available).
Both are non-credit programs, open to all enrolled Yale students (undergraduate, graduate and professional). In each program, students work with a Language Partner—a native speaker of the target language (not a formal instructor)—in two 1-hour sessions for 12 weeks. The sessions aim to develop linguistic and cultural competence through active conversation and practice of what you are studying independently. With a limited number of slots available, a selection committee reviews all applications for their merit and appropriateness, and notifies students of its decisions within four to six weeks after the application deadline. Details and how to apply at https://cls.yale.edu/fields
The deadline for applying to either program for Spring 2024 semester is October 1st at 1:00pm. Please note that all applications must be received by the application deadline (this includes applications for continued study from current DILS or Fields students).
