TrumBulletin, October 6, 2023

Hello Trumbullians!

Wow, we are in October already, which means midterms are near. It is in these circumstances that I encourage cautious time commitments, and I also highly recommend finding a moment to take a break. Trust your preparation, and the rest will take care of themselves.

Lots of things are happening! Despite the heavy downpour last Friday, a few Trumbullians took a moment to bask in the glow of their Creative and Performing Arts awards! Congratulations to all the CPA award recipients, as we look forward to their exhibits sometime late fall. In part due to the weekend rain, we had a pipe burst and which required immediate action. This repair began early on Monday, thereby affecting Entryways A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H and the HoC Office suite. Patience is recommended, and we hope that the repairs are completed while it is still relatively mild weather, as there is no heat in these locations during construction. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience.

Last Saturday, a few eager Trumbullians with med student Rose Bender (a Grad Affiliate and a past Trumbullian) went on a submarine tour in Groton CT. Their memorable trip to the USS Indiana was arranged courtesy of Trumbull Fellow Wayne Grasdock, who is Navy’s representative to Yale. Early Monday evening, we had a great turnout at the HoC House for the informational session on the Mellon Forum (for Seniors only; deadline October 9th). This is not to be confused with the Mellon Research Grant (for Juniors and Seniors; deadline November 15th). Please reach out to Trumbull’s writing tutor Adam Sexton and/or Reese McLeod at the HoC Office for questions on either the Mellon Forum or the Mellon Research Grant.

Late Monday evening, we had continuation of the Self Defense Training with Christopher Adamchek at the Dance Studio. On Tuesday afternoon, we had a good turnout at the HoC House for Tea with Wake Smith, a Lecturer at the School of the Environment and author of a new book on geoengineering entitled Pandora’s Toolbox. On Thursday evening, Trumbullians Leo Egger (as Mr. Hathe) and Meridian Monthy (as Superintendent Hochstetter) made their season debut on stage for Education at the Iseman Theater. As most of you take time to enjoy some quality time during the family this weekend, on Saturday afternoon you are welcome to stop by at the HoC House for the Family Weekend Reception.

Please write to me if you would like to feature an event, across all disciplines and crafts, in which you are participating and/or your most recent achievements. Many Trumbullians are actively presenting their talents and crafts in various campus-wide activities, which includes our amazing athletes. For example, Yale men’s soccer team is playing Dartmouth on Saturday at 7pm. A huge Moo-Rah shout-out to all Trumbull IMers for just showing up. Please note that my last week TrumBulletin shout-outs to first-years Jiayang Jin and JT Timmers had a small error. They became newest members of acapella groups Spizzwinks and Out of the Blue.

In mid-October Trumbull’s own Sophie Dvorak is the Musical Director contributing to Disguise: A Night of Scenes (TBD; Oct 13-14) and Untitled Concert (TBD; Oct 13). Also in mid-October is Desert Island / Girls Who Golf (TBD; Oct 12-14) features Trumbull’s own Samantha Fisher as Playwright & Director and two Trumbull performers, Madeleine Loewen (as Ava) and Alex Shadman (as Mr. Reinhardt). By late October, there is 10:59 by Yale Artists Cabaret (TBD; Oct 27) with Trumbull’s own Katia George as the choreographer and many Trumbull performers: Sarah Feng, Jordi Bertrán Ramírez, Megan Ruoro, Maxwell Brown.

Below is the continuing list of events coming up. Since timing of specific events are subject to change, please be on the lookout for emails regarding each event and please note some are by reservation and/or invitation.

There are many funding mechanisms at Yale to cater to your diverse interests. For example, this week we posted that applications are now open for Climate Innovation Grants (please reach out to Amar Kakirde with any questions). Come by the Head’s Office or the Dean’s Office for information regarding various opportunities.

Please note that October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast cancer has affected almost all of us in one way or another. For more information about how cancer affects us all, see: Cancer Facts & Figures and Cancer Facts & Figures for African American/Black People 2022-2024.

It’s been about two months since Associate Head Anita Sharif-Hyder and I moved into the HoC House with Leila Hyder. We sincerely would like to thank you all for the warm welcome you’ve shown us, and in some occasions we have been fortunate to spend quality time with you at the HoC House for events - some requiring a little thought, others enjoying food. We welcome ideas from you to help create an inclusive environment, requiring some collaborations perhaps. Please let me know of any concerns you may have, about anything really - from academics to aspects of campus living. We can meet at either the HoC Office or my lab at The Anlyan Center, but please check-in with Reese McLeod first.

Have a great weekend and a productive next week. Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,

Head Hyder
