Hello Trumbullians!

After an exhausting week away, I am reinvigorated by you and your enthusiasm and energy.

Friday afternoon’s Rumbull in Trumbull, organized by TCC, was a huge success! Students and other Trumbull folks enjoyed mini golf, music, Trumbull merchandise, and other goodies. Thanks to all who contributed and participated!

The Fireside Chats at Head’s House, collaborative effort between Dean Chandhoke and myself (on Monday,Tuesday, and Friday evenings) have been thoroughly enjoyed by First Years with their respective FroCo’s. There were many goodies and refreshments, including smores roasted in an actual open fire, creating the  perfect ambience for a fireside chat! A bonus was hearing some of our First Years play the piano – thank you Bryant Li and Jiayang Jin!

On Wednesday afternoon, the Tea with Julieanna Richardson of The HistoryMakers was very well attended. This was followed by an intimate dinner with our Trumbull guest at the HoC House. Many connections were made with wide ranging discussions.

This Friday evening there will be an inaugural Trumbull event called the Trumbull Tellers, which is a Poetry Slam in the Common Room, hosted by Associate Head Anita Sharif-Hyder and First Year Troy Meggie. There will be Insomnia Cookies at this event!

Below is the continuing list of events coming up. Since timing of specific events are subject to change, please be on the lookout for emails regarding each event and please note some are by reservation and/or invitation. And now…some specific shoutouts for Trumbull’s Eli Whitney Students:

Bobby Atkinson ’24 (Trumbull College; GLBL) was awarded the Francis Gordon Brown Prize by the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing, upon nomination by the head and dean of Trumbull College. The Francis Gordon Brown Prize is awarded annually to that member of “the Junior Class in Yale College who most closely approaches the standards of intellectual ability, high manhood, capacity for leadership, and service to the University set by Francis Gordon Brown.” Bobby is the first veteran and the first Eli Whitney student to win the prize. Bobby will be the student speaker at the University’s Nov. 10 Veterans Day Ceremony (12:30 at the Beinecke Plaza).

Jaweria Bakar (Trumbull College; MCDB B.S.) is a first co-author of a paper, “Inhibition of a lower potency target drives the anticancer activity of a clinical p38 inhibitor” published in Cell Chemical Biology. Her paper also appears in the National Institute of Health’s National Library of Medicine and National Center for Biotechnology Information. Jaweria will present her poster on November 5 at the Yale Biomedical Engineering Conference. In addition, she was invited to be the guest speaker at the November 16 Dean’s List Ceremony at her alma mater, CUNY-Kingsborough Community College.

Sean Brady (Trumbull College; PLSC) was a featured speaker at the September online forum, “Diversability Unplugged: Disability and Student Advocacy,” sponsored by Georgetown University (poster attached). He also was accepted into the Dahl Research Scholars Programs, which focuses on “students committed to positively influencing American public policy through research.” Sean will use his funding to run an independent experiment examining how disruptive protests affect people’s policy opinions and whether they generate a “backfire” effect. Sean will also be working with the Yale Policy Institute, an undergraduate campus think tank, to study the impact of hospital monopolization on healthcare costs and access. Lastly, he was awarded a Coehlo Disability Law, and Policy Fellowship:, an 18-month legal fellowship aimed at “Increasing students with disabilities in law, Congress, on the bench, and in academia.” He recommends the latter for any disabled students who are political science majors or prelaw.

Awa Cisse ’24 (Trumbull College; MCDB B.S.; FREN) was featured on Georgia State University’s “University Advancement” webpage (Scholarships Power Students from Perimeter to Yale). Last month, she spoke to the Trumbull College fellowship about her Stephen Gurney Fellowship experience studying yoga last summer in India, appearing via Zoom from the national SACNAS conference in Portland, OR.

Michael Gordon (Trumbull College; MCDB B.S.) received a fellowship through Yale’s STARS II Program to continue his research in the Vaccarino Lab on the pathophysiology of Tourette Syndrome.

Rachel Merrill ’24 (Trumbull College; PHYS B.S.) was selected for the Undergraduate Advisory Committee in the Physics Department. In addition, Rachel, Hillary Warolin (Trumbull College; ENGL), and Rudy Cordero (Trumbull College; CPSC + MATH B.S.), were accepted to Trumbull’s 2023-2024 Mellon Forum.

Important seasonal note! I remind you that there is New Masking Policy from the 11/9 email by Margaret McGovern, MD and Thomas Balcezak, MD. The current and anticipated increase in respiratory viral infections this fall and winter may result in more hospitalizations and patient illness in the ambulatory setting. So please take precautions!

Please hang in there for the next few days with all the busyness! Thanksgiving break is around the corner!

Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,
Head Hyder
