Hello Trumbullians! I sincerely apologize for absence of the Trumbulletin the last couple of weeks. Some personal matters needed my full attention. Thus, let me highlight a busy February month with a wonderful line-up of events since the last edition.

Friday, February 9th: CPA Awards for the spring semester were announced. Congratulations to all the winners! Please be on the lookout for some amazing exhibits in March and April in and round the college.

Saturday, February 10th: The Lunar New Year event in the Buttery was very well attended. Thanks to George Lan ‘24 and Mary He ‘24 for leading the way in the Student Kitchen to make festive treats!

Sunday, February 11th: The IRIS run in the morning had many Trumbullians participating! We commemorated the date with a lively Superbowl Party in the Dining Hall. Our Dining Hall served high demand menu items attracting a full house, and with help from the Trumbull College Council the party lasted till about 11pm!

Friday, February 16th: The Yale & Slavery book was released, and our Nick Chapel broadcasted the live stream of this event with the help from Jeff Pham ‘24. Yale takes inspiration from Carter G. Woodson, founder of Black History Month, who recognized that knowing the past opens the door to the future. Belonging at Yale has announced several forward-looking initiatives for New Haven. Please engage in these activities. Also stay tuned for Trumbullians embarking on their own outreach projects. On a personal level, I look forward to having conversations about the book, the initiatives, or other matters of your choosing.

Tuesday, February 20th: A table was set aside in the Dining Hall for a few Trumbullians and Dean Eileen Galvez, the Director of The Latino Cultural Center and a Trumbull Fellow, to host Woesha Hampson-Medina, ’18 (Branford College) who was invited by Yale Sustainable Food Program.

Friday, February 23rd: A packed Trumbull College Tea with Martin Baron (author of “Collision of Power” and winner of multiple Pulitzer Prizes) took place in the Common Room. While I could not attend due to other obligations, Associate Head Anita Sharif-Hyder was the host. It was a full house even though it was around lunch time!

Saturday, February 24th: Several Trumbullians were sighted at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven where they enjoyed  Arthur Miller’s classic play A View from the Bridge. Please be on the lookout for a signup sheet for Caryl Churchill’s Escaped Alone at the Yale Rep on the evening of Friday, March 8th.

Tuesday, February 27th: The second edition of Trumbull Tellers was hosted by Troy Meggie ‘27 and Associate Head Anita Sharif-Hyder, with Trumbull’s own Adam Sexton, Lecturer in English as the MC. It was a warm evening of storytelling by budding poets.

Wednesday, February 28th: Grad Affiliates (Raquel Leslie, Zach Brown, Diego Fernandez-Pages) hosted a Trivia Night in in the Buttery. It was an evening of oozing knowledge with some edible delights.

Thursday, February 29th: The Dining Hall served popular menu items in celebration of Black History Month. Jenelle Burgess ’26, co-founder of BlackBull (with Alexander O’Sullivan ’26 who is studying abroad this term), reserved a table to catch up with other Trumbullians on the same evening. Of note, a very common trend I’ve witnessed in our Dining Hall lately is that we are quite full consistently at dinner. I hope you feel the warmth that exudes from our Trumbull community, welcoming all.

Saturday, March 2nd: Several Trumbullians will come to the HoC House to share their baking talents on St. Patrick’s Day Cookie Bake with help from Karen Eisenmann, Service Assistant II. Another small group of students will take a trip to MoMa, led by Nicole Sonnert, Grad Affiliate.  They will tour the museum and do lunch in New York City.

Wednesday, March 6th: The FroCos will come to the HoC House for their own version of a Fireside Chat with help from Karen Eisenmann, Service Assistant II. Only the FroCos for this event, sorry!

The Mellon Forums (only for selected seniors) have continued through spring semester with leadership from Adam Sexton, Lecturer in English in collaboration with Reese McLeod, Senior Administrative Assistant II. The HoC House has been the venue for great dinners and lively presentations with great help from Karen Eisenmann, Service Assistant II and technical support from Jeff Pham ‘24. We have three remaining dates left this term with one on March 4th and two in April.

Let me remind you again of the Yale-China Fellowship opportunity for Yale graduates to spend two years teaching English language or writing in mainland China or Hong Kong. To learn more and apply here or email education@yalechina.org or email leslie.stone@yale.edu (application deadline Tuesday, March 5th).

Trumbullians have been quite active with IM sports lately. MHOOPS (Men’s Basketball), CHOOPS (co-ed basketball), and WHOOPS (women’s basketball) have done amazingly well so far. Please reach out to either George Lan ‘24 or Lael Joseph ‘25 for upcoming IM events.

Also please note that March is Women’s History Month, and we invite you all to celebrate International Women’s Day, which is a global celebration of the economic, political, and social achievements of women, took place for the first time on March 8th, 1911. Many countries around the world celebrate the holiday with demonstrations, educational initiatives, and customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers. Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women in U.S. history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. AnthonySojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States. In addition, the Yale Women’s Center is showing a movie (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) 7-9pm on Friday, March 1st.

Hearty congratulations to both Adam McPhail ‘25 and Sophie Dvorak ‘25 for being selected into The Wiffenpoofs. We are extremely proud of Awa Cisse ‘24, an Eli Whitney student, to be named a Luce Scholar. What an honor indeed!

I look forward to meeting up with around the college or the HoC Office!

Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,
Head Hyder
