TrumBulletin 1-17-25

January 17, 2025

Welcome back Trumbullians!

I sincerely hope you had a restful winter break. Over winter break, the Hyder family spent an amazing week in Morocco, and coincidentally we ran into the Monthy family (FroCo Meridian Monthy, ’25) in Marrakech! Imagine the surprise, creating a rare photo-op for the two families, in the hustle and bustle of Medina.

I hope you have survived the first week, as spring semester ramps up very rapidly. As you shop for classes, please consider the unique offerings from The Yale College Residential College Seminars. These seminars are unique and innovative courses that fall outside traditional departmental courses.

It is also time for the CPA Spring 2025 Awards, with the deadline fast approaching this weekend: Sunday, January 19th at 11:59pm. Please visit the CPA website to learn more about the awards and guidelines. If you have any questions about the CPA award, please reach out to me in the time that remains. Furthermore, there are two summer fellowships, the Gurney Travel Fellowship for Juniors and the Richter Fellowship. Deadlines for these awards are also around the corner.

In terms of college activities, they have already begun. On Monday (1/13) evening, the Mellon Forum (for Seniors only) was hosted at the HoC House. Below are a few more events that are on the calendar already. Please be on the lookout for spring activities, as many are being planned and will be posted shortly.

Jan 16th, 1:30-4pm      IT Ropes Course at Jordan’s Furniture (hosts: Rose Bender ’19 & Anushka Potdar)
Jan 26th, 12-6pm         Tournament of Champions (Grand Central Station, contact HoC Hyder)
Feb 3rd, 6-8pm             Mellon Forum (HoC House, Seniors only)
Feb 6th, 4-5pm             Tea with Jacob Padron of Long Wharf Theater (HoC House)

The American Red Cross at Yale is hosting a blood drive in the Common Room of Dwight Hall in late January:

·       Tuesday, January 21 (10:00am - 4:00pm)

·       Wednesday, January 22 (10:00am - 4:00pm)

·       Thursday, January 23 (12:30pm - 5:30pm)

·       Friday, January 24 (10:00am - 4:00pm)

If you would like to donate, you can schedule an appointment here. If prompted, use the code “YALE” to register for a time slot. They highly recommend students interested in donating to book an appointment, as walk-in slots may not be available. The decision to donate can save a life, and we greatly appreciate your consideration! If you have any questions, please email Jared Rhee, the Donor Outreach Coordinator.

The Winter/Spring menus from Hospitality have been published and they are able to incorporate some good input from students and culinarians into their offerings. Informed by Dining Fall survey results, and food waste data flowing in from our Winnow AI system, you will notice a few changes to salad bars this semester, as well as their winter offerings emerging. Seasonality and peak freshness remain a strong focus for their procurement teams, as well as comfort foods and our cultural roots. This semester, Hospitality kicks off their events with our Breaking Bread Dinner on Monday, January 20th.

On a completely note, if you are a star gazer, then you are probably aware that there is unique opportunity to see the ‘planetary alignment’ which is visible in January into February with conventional telescopes. The visible planets are Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

I wish you good luck for the semester. As the intramurals resume, I hope to see some of you at the upcoming events. Let me also remind you to get seasonal shots (flu, Covid, etc). It’s always a good time to protect yourself.

Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,
Head Hyder
