TrumBulletin Hello Trumbullians! Given it’s fall break, my note will be brief. Last Friday evening (10/10) the TrumBall at Barcelona went smoothly. On Saturday afternoon (10/11) there were a few Trumbullians who showed up for the Thimble Island Cruise. On Monday evening (10/13) lots of seniors came to the HoC House to hear Adam Sexton, Trumbull Fellow and Writing Tutor speak about the Mellon Forum requirements. Seniors, please be on the lookout for the Mellon Forum deadline coming up soon. Below is the continuing list of events. Since the timing of events is subject to change, please look out for emails regarding each event.
Oct 20th, 4-5pm Tea with Mikhail Zygar (HoC House) By the way, for those Trumbullians who are on campus over the break, there will be a pleasant surprise in the Dining Hall on Saturday evening (10/18 @ 5:30pm) that is entitled “Classic Whiffenpoofs”! Below are two summer highlights from two of our seniors. Jeremy Ng. Over this summer, he was working in Arlington, VA near Washington, DC as a software engineer for Amazon. However, every Sunday, he would perform for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as their interim carillonneur. The carillonneur there, Dr. Robert Grogan, was in the process of retirement and Jeremy essentially took up the role as his replacement. Jeremy played around 14 separate “concerts” on the bells (ring slots) with 6 of them being programmed for their annual Summer Organ Concert Series, as well for the annual Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus. Brennan Columbia-Walsh. In May and June, he interned for the Civil Rights Division of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, which took him into the community in Newark and Trenton. In July, he co-founded and directed the Allegheny Civic Fellowship, a free summer academy for underserved students in Pikeville, Kentucky, Central Appalachia, that focuses on the fundamental political and philosophical questions of democratic life. Over the course of three weeks, his students, some of whom had never received reading homework, devoured: Plato, Thucydides, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Hobbes, Locke, the Constitution, the Declaration, Publius, Lincoln, Douglass, Tocqueville, Emerson, Whitman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, William Jennings Bryan, W.E.B. Du Bois, Isaiah Berlin, and more. They crafted essays, wrote poetry, debated the social contract, ratified a constitution, staged Julius Caesar, and received scholarships from the University of Pikeville. At the end of the summer, the center that hosted him was recognized as an ACTA Oasis of Excellence on a list alongside Directed Studies. In August, he directed and acted in Fear and Trembling , a Trumbull CPA project, alongside members of the original cast at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Periodically, I would like to share some of your personal adventures and experiences. So please simply write to me or we can discuss in-person. Sincerely, MOO-RAH! Fahmeed Hyder, HoC Trumbull |
