Hello Trumbullians!

Greetings from the foothills of Denali! In early October 2024, I was writing from the foothills of the Himalayas, where I participated in the Bhutan Innovation Forum and spoke about brain drain from East to West, specifically in scientific disciplines. In early November 2023, I was writing from the Bavarian Alps, where I gave a seminar in the Department of Neuroradiology at the Technical University of Munich about metabolic imaging for the diagnosis of neurological disorders. During this Alaska trip, I presented a seminar in the Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, where they study hibernation science. I spent the latter days of the Alaska trip in Anchorage, where my group presented work on cancer metabolism at the annual conference of the World Molecular Imaging Society. I am looking forward to returning to CT on Saturday.

Meanwhile, on campus, we had two events last weekend. On Saturday (9/27) afternoon, thanks to Trumbull Fellow Wayne Grasdock, a handful of Trumbullians ventured to Groton, CT, to visit a US Navy submarine. On Sunday (9/28) morning, thanks to Trumbull Fellow Elizabeth Kagan Arleo, a small group of Trumbullians participated in the Bigelow Tea Race in Southport, CT. Congratulations to Cory Thomas-Liddle ‘28, as he came in first place for Trumbull College and 18th place for all males competing in his age group. Cory is from Boise, Idaho, via Eugene, Oregon, and he comes from a running family, with his grandfather still running marathons in his 70s. “The run was even more enjoyable than I thought it would be,” said Cory, laden down after the race with a generous swag bag and copious free food. “My favorite part was hearing the stories of fellow runners in between bouts of labored breathing and getting to run by the seaside.” Moo-rah, Moo-run.

Also, last weekend, several Trumbullians (about a dozen of them) from years past were on campus for the Cornell vs. Yale football game (which Yale won, go Bulldogs). Lynne Yao ’85 writes, “I just wanted to send you a note of thanks for our wonderful visit last weekend. We were able to visit the college and had a wonderful Sunday Brunch in the Trumbull dining hall. We were all blown away by how good the food was! We all thought we’d be spoiled if we were in Trumbull now.  We were also very impressed with the facilities in the college now. Thank you again for giving us this opportunity, and hope that we can return in the future sometime. Fortuna favet audaci!”

Below is the continuing list of events. Since timing of events are subject to change, please lookout for emails regarding each event.  I would like to remind all Trumbull students, we as the HoC office plan intentionally and if we have to cancel for low enrollment, that is an unfortunate fact that we live with.

Trumbull’s IM is off to an OK start, but we can do a lot better, Trumbullians. We need people to show up. I personally haven’t been able to partake because of my schedule, but please, if you haven’t yet, join any of the GroupMes below to receive information about each sport’s weekly schedules. Also, follow @trumbull.ims on Instagram for full schedules, game pics, and event information! For any questions about the specifics or rules of any sport, please see the Yale IMs official website.

The American Red Cross at Yale is hosting their second blood drive of the semester in the Dwight Hall Common Room over the following two days: next Tuesday, October 7th (10:00am - 4:00pm) and Wednesday, October 8th (10:00am - 4:00pm). If you would like to donate, you can schedule an appointment here. If prompted, use the code “YALE” to register for a time slot. They highly recommend students interested in donating to book an appointment, as walk-in slots may not be available. The decision to donate can save a life, and we greatly appreciate your consideration! If you have any questions, please email Josie Marks, the Donor Outreach Coordinator.

Common Closet, a YHAAP organization that sells donated and consigned clothes and donates the profits to Loaves and Fishes to fight food insecurity (and fast fashion!), is looking for ways you can support. There are drop-off bins with yellow tops in Davenport (up the stairs next to the dining hall), Silliman (lobby under the dining hall), Franklin (near the basement vending machines), and Berkeley (outside the dining hall).

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Breast Cancer Awareness Month started as a week-long event in October 1985 by the American Cancer Society. The campaign is designed to educate and encourage people to be proactive about their health. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. provides online resources and guides aimed to empower women and men with useful information. View guides. Click here to learn more about breast self-examination steps. Additional information can be found at National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), National Cancer Institute, and The American Cancer Society.

We are in October already, and midterms will be upon us quite soon, if they haven’t already. I encourage management of time commitment,s but always finding a moment here and there to take a break. Trust your preparations, and the rest will take care of itself.

I am looking forward to seeing you again upon my return! I welcome ideas from you to help create an enriched environment for us all. Please let me know of any concerns you may have, about anything really - from academics to arts to athletics to aspects of campus living. We can meet at either the HoC Office or my lab at The Anlyan Center. Please write to me.

Sincerely, MOO-RAH!

Fahmeed Hyder, HoC Trumbull
