TrumBulletin

November 1, 2022

It’s November.  How did that happen?  It will be busy month.  You’ll have lots of exams and papers will be due.  Pace yourselves.  Take some short breaks by joining in some of the teas and conversations I’ll host in Trumbull, by participating in one of the events our grad affiliates host, by representing Trumbull in an IM event and/or by just taking time to talk with a friend.  Get enough sleep and fit in some exercise.  This can be a stressful time; let us know if you need support.

Upcoming events, in the coming week

For everyone:  Today!  Tuesday, Nov. 1.  Trumbull Tea with Timeica Bethel-Macaire, Director of the African/American Cultural Center at Yale.   This will take place in the Trumbull House at 4 p.m. today.  There will be drinks and snacks available.  We’ll meet in the living room to meet Dean Bethel-Macaire, hear about upcoming initiatives in the AFAM House.  Come for the conversation and socializing and, if you want to stay for dinner, you can, just let Reese McLeod know (reese.mcleod@yale.edu).

For seniors and first years: This Thursday!  Thursday, Nov. 3.  Reception/Study Break for all Trumbull Seniors and all Trumbull First Years.  We’ll have lots of desserts (and also options for those who prefer something savory).  9:30 p.m. in the Trumbull House.   (Sophomores and Juniors will not be forgotten!  Another reception will be scheduled for you soon.)  Enter through the back door, the front door from Rose Walk OR the gate in the backyard.  Come, eat and stick around to chat and relax or, if deadlines are looming, come, grab a snack and run.

For everyone:  Trivia Night hosted by our graduate affiliates.  This will occur in our Buttery on Thursday evening from 8 pm – 9 pm.  There will be donuts.  Take a break and join in.  You can come with a team of three people or just come (all are welcome!) and the grad affiliates will place you on a team with two others.  It’s a nice chance to relax, socialize and perhaps to meet some Trumbullians whom you don’t already know.  Email grad affiliate (and former Trumbull student and FroCo, Diego (diego.fernandez-pages)), who can put together teams and needs to know about how many people will come, if you are interested.  (But feel free to just come if you decide at the last moment.)

For our senior Mellon Forum Folks:  Next Monday, November 7th Mellon Forum in the House
We’ll have our usual dinner together in the house followed by our first three senior presentations from Jaweria Bakar (MCDB), Marc Bertoni (Film) and Natalia Perez (Humanities).

Upcoming events more than 7 days out (but coming up soon! :)
 Tuesday, Nov. 8th
1.  Vote if you are registered in Connecticut!!! It gets dark early, if you must vote late in the day, be careful.  Walk with a friend or call the escort service to get to your polling place.    2.  If you’ve been elected to PBK, there will be a reception for all inductees next Tuesday, across all colleges. It takes place in the Trumbull House. Join in.  You’ll also get a notice from Dean Levesque.   3.  If you are a first year, you’ll be scheduled for Fireside Chats with Dean Chandhoke and I in the Trumbull House next week (for some of you this will take place Nov. 8th) Come with your first-year counselor; we’ll have snacks.

Wednesday, Nov. 9th
1.  Dancers (and those interested in dance!). We’ll have a Trumbull Tea in the House on Wednesday, Nov. 9th at 4 p.m.  during which author of a new book on George Balanchine (Jennifer Homans) will speak.  We’ll have a raffle for two copies of the book and all attendees will have a chance to get one of those signed copies of her book (Mr. B). Emily Coates will be there.  I’ll be there.  (And Trumbull dancers in all groups, let me know when you perform.  I love dance.  I’d love to attend your performances.)
2.  More Fireside Chats for first years will take place this evening.  Come with your first-year counselor; we’ll have snacks.

Thursday, Nov. 10th
For artists, painters, dancers, drama folks, and musicians (and all who enjoy the arts):  There will be a third Trumbull tea at 4 p.m. on this day.  Adrienne Jefferson (Head of executive arts administration and cultural equity in New Haven) will be our guest.  So too with Trumbull Fellows Eric Dillner (head of the Ct. Shoreline Alliance) attend this tea.  If you are interested in arts and culture in New Haven and along the Connecticut Shoreline, please join in the tea from 4 to 5.  If you are an artist/performer there will be a chance for you to talk about how you might become involved in arts initiatives beyond Yale and still close by.

Thanks

I thank Marc Bertoni and all in the TCC for hosting Rumble in Trumbull.  I thank our dining staff for their special Halloween dinner last evening and, especially, Manny (Manuel Portocarrero) who is back to providing us with his special, traditional, flaming Halloween dessert, served in costume.  (He always makes a special effort on our behalf on Halloween.)  I thank our grad affiliates for hosting a hike to East Rock and Trivia Night.

And I thank our IM leaders for all their efforts and all IM participants!  We ended up in first place for pickleball!  We did a great job in ping pong.  We’re in fourth place among all 14 colleges right now. That’s great!  We can do even better.  Congratulations to all for your performances so far.  Moo-rah.  Keep going!
