TrumBulletin – Thanksgiving Break

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving break.

With our first snowfall, our dining hall’s annual and wonderful pre-Thanksgiving-Thanksgiving dinner and the impending pending Game against Harvard, I am reminded of how swiftly each semester passes.  I wish you all a wonderful time at the Game (if you are going) and a great Thanksgiving and a restful and enjoyable break.  I’ve heard from many that “we need this.”  (We do!)

For those of you traveling to the Game:  Cheer loudly, enjoy yourselves and, very importantly, travel and party safely.   What’s most important to our Dean and to I (even more important than winning tomorrow) is that each and every one of our Trumbullians remains safe this weekend.   We know well that this weekend is a time for partying and that some heavy drinking does occur.  Do have fun.  Yet please do not feel compelled to drink.  Moreover, if you do drink, do so in moderation. If you are driving there and back definitely don’t drink a drop before doing so.   Leave plenty of time to travel and drive carefully.  Get some sleep tonight and be sure to eat well.  As always watch out for your friends and ask them to watch out for you.   Do not hesitate to call for emergency help if you fear a friend is in trouble.  It is far better to err on the side of caution in such cases than not to call.

For those of you traveling home (or to a friend’s home) enjoy!  For those returning to Trumbull know that I’ll be in residence throughout the week (leaving just to travel to Boston tonight; but returning tomorrow).  Trumbullians who have signed up for Thanksgiving dinner will eat that dinner at the Omni on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.  Meet in the Common Room at 4:45 if you wish to walk over together.  (Please let Debbie Rueb know ASAP if you change your mind about going.)  The deadline to sign up is noon on Monday, November 19.

Congratulations

First, of all, I congratulate our first-year students as a whole whom, I understand, represented Trumbull very well (in facing many Piersonites) last night in the opening snowball fight of the academic year.  (I am so proud!)

I also congratulate Trumbullian and music composer Milo Brandt on his new composition Open Space which was performed last evening to a full house at Art Song VI! (despite the snow) in the Beinecke Library!   I didn’t know he wrote as well as performed music.  The composition was stunning.  I also congratulate Trumbull pianist James Carrabino who performed in Guilford, CT, last Sunday in what has now become a continuing series of charity performances to raise funds for kidney cancer research.  This has been and continues to be a wonderful example of Yale-Community connections.  It reflects very well upon Yale and Trumbull (and, of course, on James).

So too do I congratulate Chris Quazzo on his performance in the Dramat’s performance of Spring Awakenings last weekend (along with all other Trumbull members of Dramat), and all the many wonderful Trumbull dancers who performed in Roshini two weekends ago and with the Yale Ballet Theatre or the Yale Dancers this past weekend.  Our youngest group of Trumbullians (between 5 and 10 years of age) really enjoyed Yale Ballet Theatre’s production of the Nutcracker.  Perhaps we’ll take them to see the other dance groups too in the future.

Finally, I want to wish the Yale Football team as a whole well tomorrow and also to recognize our many Trumbull varsity athletes who work hard and perform well throughout the year.  This week I take special note of the Yale women’s varsity volleyball team which includes Trumbullian Destiny Daniel and which just won the Ivy League Championship.  And, I congratulate our first-year varsity swimmer Alessandra Baldari who performed extremely well in a meet against Columbia.  (Yale won by a wide margin and Trumbull swimmers including Sophie Fontaine and Carrie Heilbrun as well as Trumbull diver, Sarah McKinnis, were a big part of that too.  Right now, these four are away at Ohio State for a major multi-school meet.  I’m following that. They are performing very well once again.)

Class of 1955 Fellowship.   We held an information session last evening for all junior Trumbullians who wish to apply for the class of 1955 fellowship (a special Trumbull fellowship meant to allow Trumbullians to broaden themselves beyond their academic and professional pursuits during the summer between their junior and senior years.)  All those who wish to apply should be thinking about and preparing their applications now.  If you were unable to attend last evening’s session you may still apply.  Pick up our informational handout in the main office (Room G 103) from Debbie Rueb.

Final Cut Cooking competition.   Interested in cooking?  Interested in representing Trumbull in a cooking competition in the spring?  Let me (and Yasser Ezzelden or Bernadette Janis in dining) know if you are intrigued by this possibility.  Our dining hall will help to prepare you.  I’m available as a taste tester (and anyone is welcome to join a taste tester team as well).

Happy Birthday (as well as Happy Thanksgiving) to all those whose birthdays fall during breakHailey Fuchs, Hamzah Jhaveri, Jade Chowning, Bojan Dosljak, Adriana Colon, Juliet Yates, Nikola Bakoc, Summer Lee, Dayle Chung, Abbey Burgess & Dami Adekeye.
