TrumBulletin

Hello Trumbullians! I hope you are doing well, as I write this note during my journey across the Bavaria regions in Germany. Despite being away - with help from Anita Sharif-Hyder (Associate Head), Reese McLeod (Senior Administrative Assistant II), and Deborah Bellmore (Assistant Director of Operations) - I have tried to keep a pulse on the goings-on at Trumbull.

On Friday, just in time for Halloween, our graduate affiliate, Brian Chang, led some students to the Cushing Center Brain Museum at the School of Medicine. It was a big hit, and we hope to do it again next year.

On Saturday, we held a hike to Sleeping Giant in Hamden, also courtesy of graduate affiliate, Brian Chang.  It was an incredibly beautiful, warm day. After the hike, the group went to Wentworth’s Ice Cream which is a very popular spot that serves homemade ice cream. In addition, we held a pumpkin carving activity in the Courtyard led by graduate affiliate, Jen Strtak. The group also enjoyed a variety of Halloween candy as a fun treat. The pumpkins now decorate Trumbull.

On Tuesday, we had a wonderful lunchtime conversation with Nupur Tron, founder of the Frison Horta Foundation in Belgium, and guest of Trumbull Fellows Misha Semënov-Leiva and Kassandra Leiva. She spoke to a group of students about her passion for architectural preservation and restoration. The YSO did not disappoint with their annual Halloween show that same evening, with a fantastic mashup medley of compositions to accompany their mini movie “Murder on York Street”.  A big thank you to the Dining Hall staff for the hot chocolate, apple cider and Halloween themed cupcakes at dinner. The Dining Hall was packed!

On Friday 3-5pm, Rumbull in Trumbull will be held in the Courtyard organized by TCC!  Mini golf will be featured this year. There will also be a new Rumbull t-shirt that can be tie-dyed. Apple cider donuts, pumpkin pies and apple cider will be served. TCC has will also do a Trumbull gear fire sale as well. Heidi the Yale service dog will visit too!  Come and join the festivities!

Like last week’s note on service, below are some service and fund-raising announcements.

Dwight Hall is hosting a Day of Service on Saturday, November 4th from 12-5 pm, for all students interested in getting involved in New Haven service activities. Volunteers will have an opportunity to participate in groups with students from their residential college. Volunteers from the residential college with the most sign-ups will win a secret prize! Students can sign up using the following QR code provided before November 3rd.

As you may know, a series of wildfires in August devastated the town of Lāhainā and other areas of west Maui. To support the Maui community, students of IPO (the Indigenous Peoples of Oceania at Yale) have organized a benefit concert at 7pm on Saturday, November 4th at Sudler Hall featuring a variety of performances to showcase the traditions of song and dance that have always brought together the Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) community in times of difficulty. While admission is free, donations are appreciated, and all proceeds will go to the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, which supports relief for families in need.

On Saturday, November 4th at the conclusion of Oye’s Fall Showcase at Trumbull Theater, Mecha - an organization to raise funds for the Sueños Scholarship awarded to a New Haven student entering a 4-year college or university, will sell pan de muertos and vegan hot chocolate in the Common Room between 9-10pm as people exit the show.

The American Red Cross at Yale will be hosting two blood drives in the Dwight Hall Common Room on Tuesday, November 7th (10:00am - 3:45pm), Wednesday, November 8th (10:00am - 3:45pm), and Friday, November 10th (10:00am - 3:45pm). If you would like to donate, you can schedule an appointment here. If prompted, use the code “DWIGHTYALE” to register for a time slot. It is highly recommended students interested in donating book an appointment, as walk-in slots may not be available. If you have any questions, please email Jared Rhee, the Donor Outreach Coordinator.

Yaledancers will present their fall show at the ECA Theater on November 9th to 11th at 8 pm! Yaledancers: Limelight will feature original student choreography in a variety of styles, including jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap, and musical theater. Tickets will be available starting November 3rd at 5pm at the link in the @yaledancers Instagram bio.

Also, Dr. Matthew Makomenaw - a Trumbull Fellow, Assistant Dean of Yale College, and Director of the Native American Cultural Center - invites us to join the Native American Cultural Center’s 10-Year Anniversary and Henry Roe Cloud Conference next week, November 10th and 11th. All events are open to the public, except a dinner, which requires registration.

Theatrical events with Trumbullians are continuing with success. In early November there is Hamlet (TBD; Nov 2-4) featuring many Trumbull performers, Phil Schneider (as Hamlet), Leo Egger (as Polonius), Meridian Monthy (as Horatio), Logan Ledman (as Marcellus). In mid-November Black and Blue Boys / Broken Men (Theater and Performance Studies Black Box; November 9-11) will feature Trumbull producer Maxwell Brown, and Little Women (TBD; November 9-11) will feature Trumbull assistant director Marissa Blum. In mid-November is Fiddler on the Roof (University Theater; November 15-18) featuring Trumbull performer Tybee Feiler. Finally, in early to mid-December are Alice by Heart (TBD; November 30-December 2) featuring director and musical director featuring Trumbull Sophie Dvorak, Arsenic and Old Lace (TBD; November 30-December 2) featuring Trumbull performers Samantha Fisher (as Teddy Brewster), Tybee Feiler (as Elaine Harper), and Serengeti Cox-Rodriguez (as Jonathan Brewster), and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (Theater and Performance Studies Black Box; December 7-9) featuring Trumbull performer Jordi Bertrán Ramírez (as Anatole Kuragin).

As I mentioned in last week’s TrumBulletin, please be on the lookout for various campus-wide events starting early next week that will deal with dialogues regarding difficult topics, specifying the policies and resources to support Yale students on freedom of expression.

I hope to see you next week, and wish you remain well and safe in all things we do!

Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,
Head Hyder
