TrumBulletin 9-17-18

September 17, 2018

I hope all enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather.  (I did think, “This is wonderful. Why wasn’t the sailing trip this weekend?”  But such activities have to be scheduled way ahead of time and weather just happens.  My fingers are now crossed for good weather for our TrumBall.

Francis Gordon Brown Prize:  We are thrilled to announce that our Trumbull student and senior Simon Whiteman has won one of Yale’s most prestigious prizes for an undergraduate, the Francis Gordon Brown Prize.  This prize goes to a student in the junior class in Yale College who most closely matches the standards of leadership, intellect and service to Yale College set by Francis Gordon Brown from the class of 1901.

Simon is currently captain of the Yale baseball team and a stellar student academically who is majoring in chemistry.  This prize was open to nominations of any student from any of Yale’s 14 colleges.  We’re very pleased that this year the student selected is a Trumbullian.  Simon, you’ve made us very proud.

Starting tonight!  Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.   Jointly sponsored (Silliman/Trumbull) Mindful Mediation sessions.  These are led by Professor Molly Crockett from the Yale Psychology Department and are free.  Just show up.  This semester the sessions will be held in Silliman College’s Good Life Center, Room 417 in Silliman.  During the spring, the sessions will move to Trumbull.  Trumbullians and Sillimanders are most welcome both semesters in both colleges.  Remember:  The first session is tonight in Room 417 in Silliman College.

Art Nights.  Our first open art night in our art studio was hosted on Friday, Sept. 14th in the evening by Kassandra Leiva, our graduate affiliate.  Thank you, Kassandra.  These will occur every other Friday night with the next one occurring on Friday, Sept. 28th from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.  We provide supplies.  You need not be an artist.  Just join in if you like to hang out and be creative.

Open music studio; open mic night in our Trumbull sub-basement music room (just beyond the gym).    Friday Sept. 21 from 8 to 11 p.m. hosted by Trumbull Fellow Mark Graham.  This is our first one!  The room includes drum kits, amps, piano and microphones.  Novices and experienced folks are welcome.  Play the drums, sing Karaoke style, or whatever.  Bring your guitar or bass or other favorite instrument to jam.  Mark says, “Just show up.”  The group will decide what happens next.

Applying to grad school 101.   Thinking about grad school?  Should I apply?  When?  How?  What about funding?  On Monday, Sept. 24th from 5 p.m. to 6:30 pm.  there will be an information session led by a panel of graduate students in Grace Hopper College, in the House.  This is sponsored by the Office of Career Strategy with support from Berkeley, Hopper and Trumbull Colleges.

Saturday morning Farm Tours 9/22, 9/29 and 10/6.   Each fall, Yale Hospitality hosts Yale students on tours to Connecticut farms which supply much of the food served in our dining halls.  You are transported to the farms by bus and get to talk directly with the farmers, walk the fields and enjoy tasting what is grown as well as to have a great lunch at one of the farms.  (I’ve gone on one of these tours myself and I loved it.  I also arrived back here with a bag of apples and a pumpkin.)  Buses leave Woosley Hall at 8:00 AM (sharp) and return to Yale at about 2:00 PM.  There is no charge to participate.  Yale hospitality will provide information about these trips.  (Check your email too, for links to sign up for these trips.)

(Trumbull will also be hosting an apple picking trip over family weekend.  Details and sign up information is forthcoming.  You’re welcome to attend as a Trumbull student; you are welcome to attend with a parent or family member.)

Suggesting activities for me to host.  A Trumbullian asked me yesterday about how students should go about suggesting activities.  In this case it was suggested that we sponsor a trip to a professional baseball game.  Know that you may always send me such suggestions directly.  I will also send out a survey about what you like (and don’t) soon.  We have a limited budget so a big event (requiring travel someplace and tickets) has to be balanced against other big events but I promise we’ll consider all suggestions and get back to you.  For instance, going to a baseball game is feasible.  We’re late in the season now but I’ll ask about interest and it might be something to do next fall.  Suggestions for smaller events that just require some food and/or space and/or tables and chairs (trivia nights, board game nights, etc.) are easier to say “yes” to – especially when the organizers help to make these events happen.

Keeping our shared spaces clean.  I’ve heard grumbling about the cleanliness of shared bathroom spaces.  If all can make an effort, clean up any messes made in those spaces and also resist dumping food (altogether) and beverages (without wiping up afterwards) in sinks that would be greatly appreciated by your fellow Trumbullians.

Indeed, please be considerate of all Trumbullians after using any of our shared spaces.  Make sure sinks, and floors etc. are free of debris.   Wipe down equipment you use in the gym. Throw all trash in proper containers after using the courtyards, the Study and the Buttery.
