TrumBulletin 9-5-17

September 5, 2017

I’ll usually send out the TrumBulletin on Monday, but due to Labor Day, it’s Tuesday this time.

I hope all enjoyed our long weekend, especially the lovely weather yesterday for Labor Day.

Here’s hoping we can enjoy the weather for a bit longer.

I hate to see summer end but also look forward to the fall.

Thanks to all our FroCos for leading the class of 2017 in Yale-Up last evening.  We have many athletes in Trumbull.  Let’s all cheer them on.  So too will our Trumbullians be appearing in concerts and performances of many kinds.  Support them too.  Yale is a busy, busy place but do take time to support your friends and fellow Trumbullians.  A special thanks this week goes to our Trumbull-cheese-cake-maker and cheese-cake-sharer, Eli Westerman.  He’s good and generous.  (I benefited myself.)

Ask for support when you need it.

I urge you not to hesitate to ask for support from others.  It may be a peer who can cheer you up, distract you from something that is bothering you or help you think through it.  Your FroCo can help as can the Dean and Head and, of course there are Peer Liasons too and the Yale Chaplain and folks at Yale Health.

(There’s considerable research that reveals people are far more willing to offer others help than to seek equivalent help for themselves.  I urge you to both offer and seek the support of those all around you.)

Lost & Found List Now on TC Website!

If you’ve lost an item, check the website!  The list of items Lost & Found is updated daily.  If you see something posted that you’ve lost, come by the office to claim it.  If you found an item, please bring it to the office and we’ll take care of the rest.

NOTE:  Trumbull has items that were turned in last year and never claimed.  If you lost a hat, coat, gloves, scarf, etc., maybe it was turned in to the office.  Please email tcadmin@yale.edu by Sunday, October 1st to check the catalog.  After October 1, these items will be donated.

Here’s what’s coming up in Trumbull:

A Trumbull Tradition – Romantic Friday—will be back this Friday, Sept. 8th in our Dining Hall.

For those new to Trumbull, on Friday evenings, we dim the lights in our dining hall, put out our (fake) candles, and have special treats after dinner in the dining hall.  Come join us.

Mindfulness Meditation Class, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 13th.  The Department of Psychology has hired a new faculty member who had previously taught at Oxford University, Molly Crockett.  When Molly mentioned to some of us that she’d love to lead a mindfulness Meditation class at Yale (she’s an experienced instructor), her departmental colleagues who are also Heads of College (that would be Laurie Santos in Silliman and me) jumped at the chance.

The upshot is that Molly will lead a joint Trumbull-Silliman meditation class beginning on Sept. 13th

Here’s what Molly says about the class:

“Mindfulness meditation is an ancient practice of seeing things as they really are in the present moment. This practice is a joyful antidote to our stressful daily lives. This course gives an introduction to the practice led by an experienced practitioner. No prior meditation experience is necessary. To enroll you must be able to attend a minimum of 8 out of 10 sessions. Please bring a cushion to sit on.”

Silliman Dance Studio

Wednesdays 7:30-8:30pm

Sep 13, 20, 27; Oct 4, 25

Nov 1, 8, 15, 29; Dec 6

This course will continue in the spring semester when it will be held in the Trumbull dance studio.

If you’re interested, know that Molly would love to see people continue on to an advanced group in the future and, then, to start another beginning one then as well.

So, the requirements seem to be commitment and a cushion to bring to each session. (Any sort of a cushion or pillow will do.)

Interested?  Sign up in the Main Office by Monday, Sept. 11 by 4:30pm.
