Hello Trumbullians!

I hope everyone recouped a little over Labor Day weekend. My wish for continued good weather through the weekend was granted, but it’s been a hot week! I hope everyone has been using basic coping measures through the heat spell, but fortunately the weather may turn this weekend. Please let us know if you need fans, we still have a few remaining.

We had a Trumbull surprise on Wednesday night. Unbeknownst to me, Associate Head Anita Sharif-Hyder organized a perfectly choreographed Happy Birthday reveal at the Dining Hall with a cake courtesy of Kory Evasick (Dining Hall Manager) and the entire Dining Hall staff. An amazing achievement with this exercise is that except I everyone else in Trumbull knew about this surprise! I have never had so many people sing/wish me Happy Birthday. Thank you to all for this touching gift, especially Anita who knows a thing or two about parties and surprises, so watch out Trumbullians!

We had two Trumbull events Thursday evening. Anita and I hosted the Eli Whitney Student Dinner at the Head’s House, and a little later in the evening the First Year Latine Student Mixer was held at the Common Room. Both were well attended with great food, drinks, and some banter. Of note, later this afternoon (at 5:30pm) there is an informal event at the Common Room entitled “Tennis, Math, and Structural Discrimination?” by Dr. Nils Rudi (Professor at SOM) who is partner of Trumbull’s Resident Fellow Dr. Teresa Chahine (Sheila and Ron Marcelo Senior Lecturer in Social Entrepreneurship at SOM).

A few things coming up this weekend. On Sunday morning there is a Sailing Trip in Mystic. Let’s hope for good weather! Sadly, neither Anita nor I are able to join the sailing excursion due to a prior commitment. However, Trumbullians will be in company of Trumbull royalty with Margaret Clark and Fred Polner, the previous Head and Associate Head. Please remember that the CPA Award application deadline is also on Sunday.

Please note that I mistakenly mentioned a Self Defense Training event for this Saturday evening. The correct dates for this and related events are listed below. Please note that this event has limited space, early signup, and is one of a series of four sessions. It is a statistics-based self-defense and robbery survival course. It focuses on realistic scenarios and strategies for escape utilizing verbal, social, and physical techniques to survive. Come learn and have fun with core movements that are easy to learn and use.

Trumbullians, the IM sports begin next week! With the leadership of the IM Secretaries (Lael Joseph, Aviv Pinker, George Lan, Victoria DeMersseman, and Ethan Wolf) we look forward to a great turnout at IM events, but for that Trumbull needs you! Come to any game regardless of experience – we would love to see you out there. Plus, the IM Secretaries will have merch for people who stay consistent through the season. I have personally volunteered for table tennis! Have you signed up for any IM events?

Below is the continuing list of events coming up. Since timing of specific events are subject to change, please be on the lookout for emails regarding each event and please note some are by reservation and/or invitation.

With amazing resources available at Yale, I urge you to look for support regarding any concerns. Despite some Covid-19 cases reported on campus, students have been extremely cooperative with policies about isolation and meals etc. Please look out for emails from Dean Matthew Makomenaw (Yale College Health and Public Safety Leader, Director of the Native American Cultural Center, Trumbull Fellow) on Covid-19 updates periodically. Any questions, please reach out to Head’s Office.

I am pleased to hear from some Trumbullians that I am often being sighted on Trumbull grounds. I am available to meet in-person at the Head’s Office most Wednesdays and Fridays, so please drop by but please check with Reese McLeod (Sr. Administrative Assistant at Head’s Office) first. Or just write to me at fahmeed.hyder@yale.edu.

Have a great weekend and a productive next week.

Moo-Rah!

Sincerely,

Head Hyder
